One of the things that I have a super-hard time with is realizing that this life that my purpose here on earth has nothing to do with me –it’s about God – it’s not about what I think I can do for Him – what I think I can offer Him. Friend, sometimes I tend to get a little mixed up in my relationship with the LORD – I sometimes think it’s a 50% / 50% partnership that I contribute to, but I don’t really think that’s a very Biblical theology.

Let’s hear what the Word of the LORD would say to us today.

7     “Hear, O My people, and I will speak,

O Israel, and I will testify against you;

I am God, your God!

8     I will not rebuke you for your sacrifices

Or your burnt offerings,

Which are continually before Me.

9     I will not take a bull from your house,

Nor goats out of your folds.

10    For every beast of the forest is Mine,

And the cattle on a thousand hills.

11    I know all the birds of the mountains,

And the wild beasts of the field are Mine.

12    “If I were hungry, I would not tell you;

For the world is Mine, and all its fullness.

13    Will I eat the flesh of bulls,

Or drink the blood of goats?

14    Offer to God thanksgiving,

And pay your vows to the Most High.

15    Call upon Me in the day of trouble;

I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me.” [1] – Psalm 50:7-15

When I read Scripture like this, it helps me realize a few things:

·         God is Holy and Sovereign – I am not.

·         When I am willing to submit to God, He is willing to show me the error of my ways – not the other way around. How often do we try to Monday morning quarterback God’s Plan & Execution? This is just flat-out wrong. He’s God – I am not.

·         God created everything; therefore, He owns everything – including the stuff that I may prize more than my relationship with Him.

·         There is no material gift that I can give Him that He doesn’t already have – He doesn’t need my gift, it’s me that needs to give it to Him as sign of my own submission to Him.

·         Not that He does have need, but even if He did – He wouldn’t tell me. He’s the strong vessel – I am the weak vessel. Him asking me for something would be like me asking Grace (my 2 year old) to take me to dinner – it’s just not going to happen.

·         God wants His children to be thankful for all we have and to call on Him when this Fallen World bears down on us – not seek some sort of psychological babbler who is willing to take our money (His resources) while we talk in circles about our problems and pop little magical pills that help us “cope.” God doesn’t want us to just “cope” with life – He wants us to be more than conquerors through faith in Christ (Romans 8:37).

So when I read Scripture, especially Scripture that illustrates the heart of God, and I ponder its application in my life, I am fully convinced that my relationship with God isn’t a 50% / 50% deal – it more like 99.9% (Him) / .1% (me), and even that may be overstating my role. What’s my .1%? That’s simple –  it’s demonstrating my faith in His Son – demonstrating love for Jesus the Christ – trusting in His Finished Work on the Cross – not my pitiful gifts and offerings.

My friends, we are completely unworthy to be called Children of God, but that’s the great part of Grace – He loves us in spite of ourselves.

What’s the application here? Man, once we understand these concepts, then we will move from ritualistic religion to  a developing a relationship with the LORD, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. Spiritual Life won’t be about sitting in a pew or doing this… or that… – it will be about Loving Christ – using His Spirit to become more like Him – Blessing Him by truly worshiping Him through obedience to His Word. Yeah, that’s what it’s all about – that’s what our purpose here on earth is (regardless of how many days we were allotted or how many we have left).

Love and serve the LORD – not because He needs you, but because you need Him.

Father, You are our Awesome God. Thank You for loving us – help us to continually remember our purpose here on earth. It’s in Jesus’ Holy Name we pray – Amen.

Semper Fidelis,

Jesse

Man, as I read today’s devotional by Brother-Pastor Courson, I was convicted – convicted of anger and profanity of speech in – not very “Heavenly-minded,” huh?

Let’s hear what the LORD would say to us today through one of His shepherds.

For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ.  Philippians 3:20

Newer versions translate the word ‘conversation’ as ‘lifestyle’ or ‘citizenship.’ Why? Because a person’s citizenship—be he English, French, or Australian—can be readily identified through his conversation, through the way he speaks. The same is true spiritually, for Scripture declares that out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks (Matthew 12:34). What is your conversation, your lifestyle, your citizenship? It will be revealed in the heat of battle…

After civil war had broken out between the men from Gilead and the men from Ephraim, Jephthah, leader of the Gileadites, ordered his men to seal the passes lest the Ephraimites get away.

‘But how will we identify them?’ asked his men. ‘They’re our brothers.’

‘Tell them to say the word ‘river,’ or ‘shibboleth,’ said Jephthah.

Why? Because the men from Ephraim could not pronounce the sound of ‘sh.’ Thus, instead of ‘shibboleth,’ they said ‘sibboleth,’ and were immediately betrayed by their speech (Judges 12).

The same holds true for you and me. In the heat of battle, how do we talk? When the accountant says, ‘You’re bankrupt;’ when the doctor says, ‘It’s cancer;’ when your boyfriend says, ‘Goodbye,’ what do we say? Our speech, our conversation will reveal whether we’re men and women who live for the material, the temporal, the earthly, or whether we are those who live for heaven singularly.[1]

I could blame my sins on “the contractor” who repeatedly the fired shots that inevitably led to battle after battle, but that’s just not Biblical, is it? No, my pastor gently reminded me of that last week.

Let’s go to the Word of the LORD for our True example.

21 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps: 22    “Who committed no sin,

Nor was deceit found in His mouth”; 23 who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously; [2] – 1st Peter 2:21-23

Ouch! Yeah, that one hurt too. How about we determine for ourselves today to live more like Christ and less like us – more like Jesus and less like William Wallace? How about we give Love a try when things get heated?

Father, You are our God. Help us to become more like Your Son – Help us to demonstrate His love in our lives daily – continually. It’s in Jesus’ name we pray – Amen.

Jesse

Remember a couple of days  ago we read about how God felt about complaining and lying – the God is the same Yesterday, Today, and Forever message? Believe it or not, in just the very next verse after God’s anger burned (literally there was a fire) against some of those on the outskirts of the camp – man, just right after that, you’re not going to believe this, they began to complain again! What idiots the Israelites were (I am).

Let’s hear what the Word of the LORD would say to us today.

4 Now the mixed multitude who were among them yielded to intense craving [they gave into sin]; so the children of Israel also wept again and said: “Who will give us meat to eat? 5 We remember the fish which we ate freely in Egypt, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic; 6 but now our whole being is dried up; there is nothing at all except this manna before our eyes!”

7 Now the manna [the food that God gave them to eat – gratis – just because He cared for them] was like coriander seed, and its color like the color of bdellium. 8 The people went about and gathered it, ground it on millstones or beat it in the mortar, cooked it in pans, and made cakes of it; and its taste was like the taste of pastry prepared with oil. 9 And when the dew fell on the camp in the night, the manna fell on it. [1] – Numbers 11:4-9

Man, what were the Israelites smoking? We ate freely… Freely? What! They were slaves! They were in bondage to the Egyptians, and, if you remember from prior lessons, Egypt is a picture of the world – they were symbolically slaves to the World, they ate very little because they were slaves to the bidding of their masters. How could it be that they remembered eating cucumbers, melons, leeks (whatever a leek is – I’m sure it’s good), onions, and garlic? How is this possible? Well, that’s actually a pretty easy answer – the Devil/the World is a liar – he deceives his slaves – he makes them delusional.

The World will make you remember the “Good” times – the party and the drinking, but it conveniently erases or dims the memories of the hangover and DUI that costs so many families so much across this country. The Liar helps you to remember that “Great” one night stand, but it keeps you from seeing the reality of devastation that’s left in the wake for the other spouse and the children to clean up – let’s just face it, the World promises you happiness, but it delivers misery.

And to compound the pain, the Goodness that the LORD makes available to us all – His Spiritual manna – well, when we’re under the influence of the World, the Good things of God just don’t seem very appealing.

Don’t get me wrong, I know personally that there’s pleasure in sin for a season (Hebrews 11:25), but in the end, we always reap what we sow, more than we sow, and later than we sow (Brother-Pastor Charles Stanley).

What does this mean? First of all, this says that we can’t plant corn and expect to have watermelons pop up a few months later – we can’t sow a field full of destruction/misery and expect happy days ahead. Secondly, we don’t plant a single seed and expect to get just a single seed back – what we will receive is multiplied a hundred or thousand times over. Lastly, when we plant a seed, we can expect it to always sprouts later – sometimes even when things have changed and we think everything is going to be okay. These 3 principles are simple Laws of our LORD – that’s the way He operates.

“Well, Jess, that’s good to know, but I still don’t get it – what does God want from me?”

My friend, let’s continue on in His Word.

‘Return, backsliding Israel,’ says the Lord;

‘I will not cause My anger to fall on you.

For I am merciful,’ says the Lord;

‘I will not remain angry forever.

13    Only acknowledge your iniquity,

That you have transgressed against the Lord your God,

And have scattered your charms

To alien deities under every green tree,

And you have not obeyed My voice,’ says the Lord.

14 “Return, O backsliding children,” says the Lord; “for I am married to you. I will take you, one from a city and two from a family, and I will bring you to Zion. 15 And I will give you shepherds [men & women of God] according to My heart, who will feed you with knowledge and understanding. [2] – Jeremiah 3:12-15

“Yeah, Jesse, but how do I do that?”

Well, let’s go back to the Word of our God.

16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. [3] for 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just [we’re not, but He is] to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. [4] – Hebrews 4:16 & 1st John 1:9

Father, we thank You for Your Word, and we pray that You would allow Your Spirit to work it over in our hearts, so that we may demonstrate It in our daily lives. It’s in Jesus’ holy name we pray – Amen.

If God Is For Us…

It’s amazing how the Word ministers to us where we are – regardless of our situation – in spite of ourselves (it’s often me who gets myself into the situations that require ministering to).

In case you’ve deleted the last couple of e-mails and you missed out – well, there’s been a little tribulation in my recent life, and wouldn’t you know it – here comes the Word to speak us about how we should feel about our trials.

Let’s hear what the Word of the LORD would say to us today.

God’s Everlasting Love

31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? 33 Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written:

“For Your sake we are killed all day long;

We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.”

37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. [1] – Romans 8:31-37

So it was a rough day? From Eternity’s perspective it’s irrelevant – if you’re a Believer. Did the LORD have to put you in front of the brass mirror (symbol of judgment in the Old Testament – showing us our sin, so we can improve) recently? Man, it will be okay – that’s just growing pains – preparation for the Kingdom that’s coming soon.

So why is it okay when life throws you a curveball? Because if you’re a Believer, the LORD is for you, and that’s what counts in the grand scheme of things. As James said, “our lives are but a vapor,” and think about that for a minute – if our entire life is but a vapor, the past few weeks wouldn’t even be visible – that’s how insignificant my “BIG problems are.”

Instead of worrying about our ordeals, how about we rejoice in our Salvation?

Father, You are our God – Jesus is our Savior – the Spirit is our Guide and Comforter, we thank You, LORD. Help us to remember Your Sovereignty in our times of trial. It’s in Jesus’ name we pray – Amen.

Semper Fidelis,

Jesse

It’s been a rough couple of weeks (months)… Tests and trials with contractors, and I think I may have also been doing a little (or a lot) of complaining to the LORD, not thinking about the fact that He is Sovereign – He’s the One that controls the tests and trials I face as one of His children, so complaining might not be such a good thing.

Let’s hear what the Word of the LORD would say to us today.

The People Complain

11 Now when the people complained, it displeased the Lord; for the Lord heard it, and His anger was aroused. So the fire of the Lord burned among them, and consumed some in the outskirts of the camp. 2 Then the people cried out to Moses, and when Moses prayed to the Lord, the fire was quenched. 3 So he called the name of the place Taberah, because the fire of the Lord had burned among them. [1] – Numbers 11:1-3

“Yeah, but that’s the Old Testament stuff… Things are different now that we have Jesus.”

Unfortunately this “God is different now” theology seems to be growing in popularity among “American Christians,” but for disciples of the Word – children of the God of the Bible, we know that God is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow – He does not change (Hebrews 13:8). An interesting note – found in that next verse (13:9)  - the verse that follows that yesterday, today, and tomorrow statement is, “so don’t get carried away by strange doctrines.” It’s a warning – don’t get drawn into things like “popular Christianity” that is rarely reflective of the True Character of the God of the Bible.

But for those who do believe that the LORD’s Righteous Anger and Fire went out the door with the Ascension of Christ (Acts 1:9), let us continue to hear what the Word of the LORD would say to us today.

Lying to the Holy Spirit

5 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession. 2 And he kept back part of the proceeds, his wife also being aware of it, and brought a certain part and laid it at the apostles’ feet. 3 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself? 4 While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.”

5 Then Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and breathed his last. So great fear came upon all those who heard these things. 6 And the young men arose and wrapped him up, carried him out, and buried him.

7 Now it was about three hours later when his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. 8 And Peter answered her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for so much?”

She said, “Yes, for so much.”

9 Then Peter said to her, “How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.” 10 Then immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. And the young men came in and found her dead, and carrying her out, buried her by her husband. 11 So great fear came upon all the church and upon all who heard these things. [2] – Acts 5:1-11

My friends, He is the God of Love and Salvation, but we need to remember that we have to conform to His Programwe need to understand His Character, not the other way around. Someday, each of us is going to meet the God of the Biblenot the god that we may have created in our own minds, and when that happens… Well, let’s return to the Word of the LORD.

The Great White Throne Judgment

11 Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. 14 Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire. [3] – Revelation 20:11-15

For those of us who have given our lives over to the LORD – surrendered to His will, our names are in the Book of Life – we will spend Eternity in Heaven, but, if you haven’t done so – if you’re waiting to slide in at the 11th hour – perhaps on your death bed… Man, is it worth the risk that you’re taking?

Father, Your Word is True – Your Word is Clear. We pray that You would reach out to the hearts of our friends and family members who have not accepted You as their God through confession of Faith in Your Son, dying to self to live for You. It’s in Jesus’ Holy name we pray – Amen.

Love – Not Sacrifice

Have you ever really wondered what the heart of God is really like? There are quite a few insights into His essence throughout the Bible, and in the middle of the LORD’s discourse to the Israelites through His servant/prophet Hosea, we gain an additional insight.

Let’s hear a portion of the Word of the LORD…

6For I [God] desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings. [1] – Hosea 6:6

What’s desired by God? Steadfast- Unwavering – Immovable – Unfaltering –completely LOVE Him and our desire and action get to truly know Him.

What’s not desired by God? Sacrifice of duty – not LOVE – offered in ceremony without any knowledge Him to whom we offer.

Our relationship with God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit isn’t one of obligation or duty – it’s like a marriage or deep friendship, it must be based in love, and from that love – based upon that love that we love Him and are obedient to Him. The sacrifices and burn offerings spoken of here were done by the Jews out of obedience to the law – keeping the letter of the law but missing the intent of the law.

The problem here is that Obedience has to come from love – not the other way around. The Jews didn’t get that – they were just going through the motions – they were just playing church or Synagouge – you get the picture. When it’s the other way around – when you only love out of obedience, eventually your love and faithfulness will falter.

For example, I love my wife dearly – more than any other person in the world – because of this love, I don’t commit adultery – it’s just a natural result of that love – I love my wife dearly; therefore, I don’t commit adultery – Not because “It’s a Rule – Thou shall not commit adultery” but because – well, I don’t want to commit adultery – I love her – I wouldn’t want to hurt her by accepting a cheap substitute in her place.

When you truly love someone, then you do what’s right because you want to. Does that make sense? That’s what the LORD is talking about here today – He wants us to love Him – to want to know Him – so that our sacrifices and ceremonies will have value – so that they are heartfelt.

Father, help us to love You as You love us – Help us to be obedient to Your Love by being faithful to You, as You are faithful to us. It’s in Jesus’ Holy name we pray –Amen.

Semper Fidelis,
Jesse

You know, I think it has possibly been one of the hardest weeks of tests and trials that I have ever gone through – physically (long hours & lack of sleep), mentally (fighting safety battles on what seems like every front – occasionally feeling like a Lone Ranger without a Tonto), and spiritually (I think I sounded more like I did in the Marines this past week than a since I was Born Again – wanting to solve problems with a Louisville Slugger). It was just hard – it’s been a war – that’s why this message from Brother-Pastor Spurgeon hit me in just the right spot. I hope it Blesses you as well. (Spurgeon’s comments on the Scripture are in parentheses)

August 22.—Morning. [Or April 11.]
“Blessed are the poor in Spirit.”

Matthew 5:1–12

AND seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: (Where he could find a suitable position for an audience. How different was this hill of the gospel from the Sinai of the law! Israel trembled before a mountain of curses, we rejoice in the mount of beatitudes.) and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: (Sitting was the usual posture of an oriental teacher; he spake as from the chair of authority, and his learners gathered at his feet.)

2 And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying, (Now was opened the richest fountain of instruction which had ever flowed for the good of mankind. He who had aforetime opened the mouths of prophets now opened his own mouth. Speaking distinctly and earnestly, as all should do who have an important message to deliver, he went on to pronounce seven benedictions upon seven sorts of persons. These seven descriptions make up a perfect character, and the seven blessings appended thereto when combined constitute perfect bliss. The whole seven rise one above another like the steps of a ladder of light, and the blessings appropriate to each grow out of the virtues described. At the close of the seven beatitudes of character comes an eighth and double benediction bestowed upon that persecuted condition which is the present result of holiness. The whole make up a celestial octave of benediction.)

3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for their’s is the kingdom of heaven. (The first step of the ladder is low, and therefore the more readily reached. It begins where the law ends. The law reveals our poverty, and Jesus removes it. Men who know their spiritual poverty are the only ones who by faith can lay hold upon the true riches of grace.)

4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. (To their sense of need is now added holy sorrow for sin; this leads them to Jesus, and he consoles them.)

5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. (Men who are repentant cannot be proud, hence the next blessing is to the gentle in spirit. These enjoy what they have, and, being content with the divine will, they possess by birthright both this world and worlds to come.)

6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

Pining for more holiness, they press forward towards it, and reach it, while the self-satisfied miss it by self-conceit. The Lord will be sure to fill us if we long after the best things.

7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. (They do good, and get good. Being filled with righteousness, they are empty of all malice, and are loving to others, and so win their love. God will show no mercy to those who are unmerciful to their fellow men.)

8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. (Sin puts out our eyes. When the heart is pure, the spiritual eye grows bright, and the pure and holy Lord reveals himself.)

9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

This is a high attainment, and follows upon purity: “first pure, then peaceable.” He who reaches it shall have clear evidence of his adoption into God’s household. May each one of us try to be a peacemaker in the family, in the church, and in the world.

10, 11 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for their’s is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

The world cannot appreciate those traits of character which the Lord delights in, hence its opposition and spite. Be it ours to endure hardness as good soldiers of Jesus, never for a moment flinching from cross-bearing for Jesus’ sake.

Bless’d are the humble souls that see

Their emptiness and poverty;

Treasures of grace to them are giv’n,

And crowns of joy laid up in heaven.

Bless’d are the men of broken heart,

Who mourn for sin with inward smart;

The blood of Christ divinely flows,

A healing balm for all their woes,

Bless’d are the men of peaceful life,

Who quench the coals of growing strife;

They shall be called the heirs of bliss,

The sons of God, the God of peace.[1]

Father, thank You for Your Word, and the men and women You have placed here to tell us all about it –  help us live Your Way everyday. It’s in Jesus’ name we pray – Amen.

Semper Fidelis,

Jesse
